This is a protest painting. It’s a response to the phenomenon of cutting down trees and erasing open spaces, especially in the courtyards of buildings near where I live. All in the name of expanding apartments and maximizing construction.
When a tree is cut, my heart cries.
The tree in this painting, a Bauhinia Variegata, stood just outside my home. It offered shade, bloomed beautifully each spring, and at night, gently folded its leaves. I painted it in the moment before it was completely destroyed. A few months ago, it was cut down entirely.
This piece is my way of remembering it, preserving what was lost.
